UWA Student Guild Central Hub

The Club Collaborative Zone establishes an intersection point for activity within the campus. The students expressed a strong desire for a contemporary environment full of natural light, with a shared, flexible layout in place of the previously separated rooms. The paths of over 120 clubs cross here, and the interior design gives expression to these journeys. A meandering path runs unbroken through the space, moving from floor to ceiling via joinery and walls, continually connecting, and leading to the collaborative heart of the facility. The students’ agreement to adopt an open-plan layout has yielded greater usable space, superior light quality, effective natural ventilation and increased floor to ceiling heights.

The Guild’s Manager Tony Goodman and President Maddie Mulholland are enthusiastic in their praise: “The UWA Student CCZ is without question Australia’s leading university campus facility for clubs, and serves to deliver the best possible experience for students”.

Engineers made the concept possible with unobtrusive steelwork propping the floor above and introducing large openings. The design provides the most comfortable environment without air conditioning. The re-use of jarrah from the original fit-out was important in the design approach, and the builder embraced this with careful attention to joinery and finishes.
