Hames Sharley created a Master Plan and design for Stage 1, the award-winning Australis, that conveyed Adventist Residential Care as a leader in retirement and aged services. The design outcome took advantage of the site’s assets and location by capitalising on the Hames Sharley project team’s firm understanding of residential architecture, master planning and urban design.
Architecturally, the design solution for Australis focused on opening up internal space to provide residents with a connection both within and outside community, the latter being the wider neighbourhood and surrounding environment.
The design sought to maximise views north to the city from as many apartments as possible, with Australis having a legible built form with one common entry point to allow for seamless integration into the longer term Master Plan vision. Amenities include a large multi-purpose communal space, several smaller activity rooms, indoor pool with spa and sauna, lawn bowls area and gymnasium.
A communal hub at the base of the building was designed to enhance the lives of the residents, who benefit from the use of an active ground floor and well-designed circulation spaces with access to daylight and ventilation.
