Hudson Yards, an ambitious ‘green’ development in New York City, is being called the first “quantifiable community”. The development integrates the science of cities research, led by Constantine Kontokosta deputy director of New York University’s Center for Urban Science and Progress.
The project researchers will gather data on energy and water use, greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants. The intention is to evaluate the data against human behaviour. Kontokosta hopes the study of cities and application of large-scale data collection will contribute to more liveable cities and social reforms.
New York City is progressive in its approach to improving the green status and liveability of their city; a new law – Local Law 84 – requiring annual reports on energy and water use by properties of 50,000 square feet or more.
