- The objective was to create a vibrant research and education based town that would attract the world’s best players in information communication technology. The precinct will eventually include 6,000 dwellings, 330,000m² of commercial and 80,000m² of research facilities.
Hames Sharley prepared a structured plan for the Technology Precinct in Bentley, a specialised centre under the activity centres policy. This was one of the largest urban redevelopment projects planned in metropolitan Perth. Located within 1.5km of two regional shopping centres, Bentley Technology is adjacent to the Curtin University of Technology and comprises a total site area of approximately 380ha with a 12ha town centre. The objective was to create a vibrant research and education based town that would attract the world’s best players in information communication technology. The precinct will eventually include 6,000 dwellings, 330,000m² of commercial and 80,000m² of research facilities.
There is a focus upon public transport and the minimisation of the precincts ecological footprint. Our sustainability framework addressed issues such as adaptable design, minimisation of car usage, increased biodiversity, wastewater recycling and the use of recycled building materials. All new buildings will be required to generate at least 40% of their energy needs and are to achieve as a minimum a 5 star Green Star rating and 4.5-star ABGR standards. Achievement of higher standards will be rewarded with substantial development bonuses.
