Hames Sharley was commissioned to provide architectural services for the refurbishment and expansion of this neighbourhood shopping centre. The design, which aimed to refresh the existing centre and accommodate a new ALDI supermarket, took into consideration visibility and visitor experience, with the result being well-lit and monitored spaces to ensure the safety of patrons.
By introducing more contemporary aesthetics, the centre has become more aligned with the surrounding neighbourhood. Works included upgrading the two existing entries and creating a new entry to the east, new feature metal cladding to the façade as a layering gesture and new finishes to the mall interior to create a brighter and warmer visitor experience.
The centre was defined in two halves, the ‘North’ and ‘South’, with the latter demolished and rebuilt to create generous spaces. Some existing skylights were retained to brighten areas, while timber-look battens were added to the ceiling throughout both North and South to soften the spaces. Perforated metal cladding was added at high level to add a layer of interest to the façade and texturing to the floor finishes was achieved by introducing a varying lay pattern.
Latent conditions were dealt with as they arose through coordination with consultants to achieve viable solutions for the client that were cost and time neutral.
