Just like the drawbridges of ancient castles, kinetic architecture refers to designs that allow part of a building’s structure to move, without reducing its overall integrity.
In an article published by Architizer this month, an exciting new type of kinetic façade is introduced, in the form of a window-meets-balcony.
The Bloomframe®, designed by Amsterdam-based firm Hofman Dujardin Architects and developed by French manufacturer Kawneer is an innovative window that morphs magically into a balcony with a simple ‘click of a button’.
Following an applauded computer-generated demonstration in 2008, the Bloomframe® has spent the past eight years in development, but it was its 2015 presentation at the International Construction Exhibition BATIMAT in Paris that caught the attention of designers and developers around the world.
In early 2016 HofmanDujardin released a video, which strikingly shows the transformational capabilities of the Bloomframe®, as it converts the glass-windowed façade of an entire apartment building into sleek, transparent balconies.
While the Bloomframe® is yet to be released and may have a rather prohibitive price tag, this latest video is sure to capture the attention of anyone looking for smart and stylish solutions for apartment living.
