A new solar highway in China will allow electric cars to recharge while on the move.
Located in Jinan, the capital of Shandong province, the road will stretch two kilometres and be made up of three layers. The top will be transparent concrete, under which will sit a middle layer of solar panels. The bottom level will be insulation, to protect the panels from the damp ground.
Once completed, the highway will produce power for road lights, signboards, surveillance cameras, and tunnel and toll-gate facilities, with the ability to recharge electric cars intended to follow soon after.
While this will be the first solar road in China, the concept is not entirely new – other examples include a solar-panel bike path in the Netherlands and solar sidewalks in Missouri, USA.
