Territorians are set to benefit from better sport and recreation facilities with the development of a Marrara Sporting Precinct Masterplan.
The Northern Territory Government has awarded interdisciplinary design practice Hames Sharley the contract to draft a masterplan which will provide a roadmap for improved sporting infrastructure for Territorians, while establishing the Precinct as an iconic sporting facility for the Northern Territory.
The new precinct masterplan will incorporate all existing and future sporting venues and active recreation facilities to create a friendlier visitor experience for operators, players and spectators of various sporting codes.
“Sport is an important part of life for many Territorians and it’s essential that we have the right infrastructure in place to support the sporting events which bring our community together,” said Department of People, Sport and Culture CEO, Samantha Livesley.
“The Masterplan is an opportunity to design the facilities we need to set us up for future sporting success and ensure that Marrara is regarded as a top-class precinct which attracts sporting talent and is a comfortable place for spectators to enjoy watching their teams perform.”
Hames Sharley’s NT Studio Leader Alex Quin said the new precinct masterplan will set out a roadmap for the development of Marrara Sports Precinct into a world class sporting precinct with excellent health, social and economic outcomes for Darwin.
“We are looking forward to embarking on the briefing process and undertaking stakeholder engagement to determine the best people-focused outcome for Marrara, for the benefit of all.”
The project expands on Hames Sharley’s legacy of shaping vibrant new sport and recreation complexes in the Territory, including Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre, Katherine Sportsground Pavilion, Anzac Oval, and current work on a multi-purpose sport, community and recreation hub in Ngukurr.
