Port Adelaide is a proud football club based at the iconic Alberton Oval for most of its 150-year history. In 2020, Hames Sharley was commissioned to master plan and design the upgrade and expansion of PAFC’s existing high-performance training facility as well as create opportunities for integration and outreach with community sport. The proposed development includes a range of training and community facilities:
+ High-performance training facility – indoor synthetic AFL training turf, strength and conditioning gymnasium, player amenities (change rooms, physio and strapping), player wellbeing facilities (kitchen, study rooms and lecture theatre) and recovery suite, AFL staff offices and amenities and relocated staff and player car parking.
+ Alberton Recreation Facility – this will include two indoor basketball courts (also to be used by PAFC), outdoor soccer pitch (also to be used by PAFC), dedicated change rooms and amenities and shared car parking with PAFC.
The project delivers a high standard in mixed-use design and sets a precedent for community facility integration in the high-performance sporting arena.
By undertaking a significant stakeholder engagement process, the team was able to clearly articulate the value proposition, supported by a series of aspirations from the interrogation of the project brief, research and benchmarking. With set and agreed project aspirations, the project team created a design that showcased PAFC’s proud history and satisfied the needs of the wider community.
The solution was a place-based design response, with buildings that maintained a visual connection to the oval and integrated into the existing landscape. Facilities have been designed to enhance player, staff and community wellbeing. Hames Sharley delivered an outcome that seamlessly integrates into context and place and celebrates the culture of PAFC.
